Culinary Communion

The experience of food is an emotional experience, it's a social experience, it's an existential physiological experience, it's a psychological experience. It unifies, to a great deal, across different cultural traditions as an experience.

The Fine Print

A couple of important details about classes follow. It is important to make sure you understand these issues, particularly our cancellation policy. By registering for a class you indicate that you have read and accepted this policy. Please call us if you have any questions or concerns: 206.284.8687.
  • Payment Confirms Your Registration.
We require that all classes be pre-paid; your registration is not confirmed until payment is received (unless other specific arrangements have been made). This means that series must be paid in full before the first class. Classes sometimes fill up very quickly and we can't hold your place without payment. (Because we are a small business and because our class sizes are so small, having one confirmed but unpaid student drop out at the last minute can really hurt us.) Thanks for your understanding!

By registering for a class or series at the regular price, you are guaranteeing your spot in that class or series. You are therefore ineligible for any future discounts which may be offered for that class or series.

  • Cancellation Policy: Students.
All Series and Individual Classes, including Wine Classes, Demos, etc.
If you cancel your registration more than two weeks before a class or the beginning of a series, you will receive a full refund. For cancellations less than two weeks before but more than four days before class (or the beginning of a series), tuition is refunded at 50%. For cancellations within four days of class or the beginning of a series, and for no-shows, we're sorry, but your tuition is nonrefundable.

Please note that gift certificates are just like cash with regard to cancellations! When you indicate that you'll be using a gift certificate for a class, it is as if you've paid us in cash. The value of the gift certificate is voided by half for cancellations less than two weeks but more than four days before class; the gift certificate is completely void for cancellations within four days of class or the beginning of a series and for no-shows.

    Make-Ups for Series Classes
We understand that emergencies come up and plans change without notice—often events occur over which there's no control. So, if you need to miss a class in a Series or Mini-Series, even within four days of a class, it is possible to make the class up the next time that Series or Mini-Series is held, with these stipulations:
    • There must be room in the make-up class; if that class is full, we may or may not be able to still squeeze you in, depending on the space and the other students, but at this point, the offer only officially stands if there's a free space in the class. There is a make-up form you will be asked to complete to indicate that you understand you'll be responsible for watching our schedule and requesting a make-up.
    • You may be charged a materials fee for the make-up class. If you cancelled your original class within four days, materials had already been purchased for you, and we don't want to have to purchase materials for one student twice—that will only drive up tuition for everyone. This fee is usually $20; we'll let you know know if the fee is different for your particular class.
    • You can only make up the class you missed. You can not substitute another class for the class you missed.

However, please note that, effective 4/03, folks who don't show up and don't call are not eligible for a make-up class. Also, we do not offer make-ups for Individual Classes.

Cancellation for Make-Ups works the same as if you had paid in cash for the make-up class. Here's an example scenario: You were enrolled in our Techniques series, but were planning to be out of town for the Meats class. You coordinated with us for a make-up class date—you don't owe a materials fee—and we sent you a confirmation for the make-up class. If you discover in advance that you can't attend the make-up class, just let us know more than four days in advance and we'll reschedule as before. With less than four days' notice, you'll owe a materials fee to reschedule. (If you already owed a materials fee, you will now owe two.) No call or no show still negates your eligibility for a make-up class.

  • Cancellation Policy: Culinary Communion.
We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule a class if it has not been more than half filled within four days of the class date. In this situation, students who are registered for the class may either receive a full refund or register for a rescheduling of the class.

We also reserve the right to cancel class in the event of instructor illness or for other emergencies. In this situation, students who are registered may receive a full refund (in the case of an Individual class only), or register for a rescheduling of the class, or make the class up at another time (in the case of Series classes).

Culinary Communion reserves the right to change instructors without notice, and to change the order of classes in a series without notice.

  • Private and/or In-Home Classes.
Private classes, whether held in a student's home, CC House, or another location, must also be paid in advance. A minimum deposit of 30% of the class cost must be paid to reserve a class date. That deposit is fully refundable, less $25 handling, until two weeks prior to the class. Full tuition or class cost must be paid within two weeks of the class date; in the case of cancellation, for illness, emergency, or other reasons, this amount is nonrefundable within two weeks of the class date.

  • Children.
Children and minors under the age of 21 are not allowed at wine classes. With regard to children in attendance at other classes, please be courteous and thoughtful of fellow students. If children will cause a distraction, we request that they not attend. If you intend for your child to participate in class and/or to eat with the group, please register him or her as a student; contact us to discuss your child's age and abilities. In general, our classes—whether seminar-style, demonstration-style, or hands-on—are not suitable for very young children; however, we welcome children with enough attention span and interest in the subject matter. Please feel free to call us to discuss your specific situation and/or your child's abilities and interest levels.

  • Miscellaneous.
By registering for a class, students indicate and acknowledge that they have read and accepted this policy. By taking a Culinary Communion class, individuals are considered a part of our CC "Community of Foodies" which for legal purposes may be considered a private club. Culinary Communion reserves the right to refuse services and classes to anyone.
